On March 13,2018,we had a heating and air system put in by Eddie Hawkins and Tim Sexton. These were the nicest men that have ever done work for us. It was put into my 90 year old dads house. He walks with a walker, so these gentlemen, went over to him, shook his hand, and talked to him, not making him get up. They did things not even on their list to do, so my father would not be charged for it. They found black mold in the vents, wiped it out and explained the Halo to us.They were here from 9am to about 4:30 pm. Explained the system to us, Eddie even gave us his personal cell phone number, in case something came up we needed to ask.Thanked my dad for allowing them to be in his house. If these men are an example of the other workers from Hep, they will go a long way. Would give them 10 stars if I could. Very nice, helpful, courteous men--Way to go Eddie and Tim

HEP Ventilation and Air Quality Expertise in Manchester

The distinctive climate in Greater Manchester, shaped by Atlantic airflow, urban density and the legacy of industrial activity, demands a specialist approach to heating, air-conditioning and ventilation. HEP delivers that specialist approach every day, integrating technically robust HVAC engineering with a deep understanding of local building stock, from Victorian terraces in Chorlton to contemporary glass-fronted offices in Spinningfields. By focusing on ventilation and indoor air quality as the core of all HVAC decisions, HEP safeguards occupant comfort while optimising system efficiency and regulatory compliance.

Manchester’s eclectic mix of heritage structures and new-build developments poses unique thermal and airflow challenges. Solid-wall construction, limited roof voids, mixed-mode façades and high internal heat gains each affect how fresh air is introduced, tempered, filtered and extracted. HEP engineers begin every project with a forensic building analysis, establishing airflow pathways, infiltration rates, contaminant sources and occupancy profiles. That data-rich approach underpins tailor-made systems that deliver consistent temperatures, balanced humidity and notably healthier indoor environments.

Comprehensive Heating and Air Conditioning Solutions

System Design and Installation

HEP’s design methodology merges computational modelling with on-site diagnostics to size equipment accurately and map out ducting routes that fit Manchester’s often congested service zones. Key considerations include:

  • Sensible and latent load calculations aligned to CIBSE guidelines
  • Plant selection for seasonal coefficient of performance (SCOP) optimisation
  • Acoustic modelling to protect neighbours and interior quiet zones
  • Integrated control architecture for mixed heating and cooling modes
  • Future expansion capacity to accommodate tenant churn or building extensions

By harmonising heat pumps, high-efficiency gas boilers, VRF arrays and chilled water systems, HEP delivers responsive thermal comfort that adapts to Manchester’s rapid weather shifts.

Preventive Maintenance and Scheduled Servicing

Ongoing optimisation preserves equipment life expectancy and ensures consistent indoor air quality. HEP maintenance programmes encompass:

  • Filter replacement regimes based on particulate loading and IAQ sensors
  • Coil cleaning to maintain thermal transfer efficiency
  • Refrigerant charge verification for leak prevention
  • Fan belt tension checks and motor bearing lubrication
  • BMS trend analysis to detect drift before it becomes downtime

Proactive interventions minimise emergency call-outs, safeguard warranty terms and protect occupant wellbeing.

Retrofit and Upgrade Projects

Ageing plant rooms across Manchester’s red-brick mills, converted warehouses and post-war office blocks often struggle with rising energy costs and changing occupancy patterns. HEP upgrades equipment in situ, phasing works to avoid tenant disruption. Typical measures include:

  • Replacing fixed-speed compressors with inverter-driven alternatives
  • Adding energy-recovery wheels to existing air handling units (AHUs)
  • Converting electric heaters to air-source heat pumps
  • Integrating thermal storage to shave peak demand

These retrofits slash carbon output while providing tighter control of airflow and humidity.

Ventilation Strategies Tailored for Manchester Properties

Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)

Manchester’s urban air can carry elevated NOx and particulate levels, yet comfort-driven occupants demand steady fresh-air volumes year-round. MVHR systems introduced by HEP achieve this by:

  • Recovering up to 90 % of outgoing heat to temper incoming air
  • Employing counter-flow exchangers to prevent cross-contamination
  • Implementing frost protection algorithms during cold Pennine snaps
  • Allowing night-purge modes to flush heat buildup from highly glazed spaces

The result is superior IAQ without the penalty of increased heating bills.

Demand-Controlled Ventilation for High-Occupancy Spaces

Meeting rooms, lecture theatres and open-plan offices experience variable occupancy peaks. HEP deploys demand-controlled ventilation (DCV) that modulates airflow based on real-time CO₂ levels, VOC concentrations and humidity. Benefits include:

  • Responsive adjustment that curtails energy waste when rooms are vacant
  • Enhanced cognitive performance linked to lower CO₂ levels
  • Reduced noise because fans operate only at the speed necessary to meet demand

Kitchen, Bathroom and Utility Extract Systems

Moisture-laden, odorous or grease-filled air requires dedicated extract routes. HEP designs specialist ventilation to:

  • Capture effluent at source with canopy hoods in commercial kitchens
  • Isolate wet-room moisture to curb mould growth in residential apartments
  • Incorporate interlocked make-up air supply to prevent negative pressure drops
  • Use grease-rated ducting and fire-rated dampers to support building safety strategies

Indoor Air Quality Services Focused on Health and Productivity

Advanced Filtration and Air Purification

Airborne pollutants threaten respiratory health, especially in urban corridors adjacent to major routes such as the Mancunian Way. HEP combats pollutants through multi-stage filtration:

  • G4 or M5 pre-filters intercept coarse dust and fibres
  • F7 or F9 fine filters tackle PM₂.₅ particulates
  • Activated carbon cells adsorb odours and volatile organic compounds
  • Optional UV-C or plasma air purification neutralises pathogens

Filter selection is guided by local air monitoring data and building usage, ensuring cost-effective protection without over-specification.

Humidity Management and Condensation Control

Manchester’s relative humidity can swing wildly, with damp Atlantic air mass in winter and dehumidified interiors during heated periods. HEP integrates:

  • Desiccant dehumidifiers for archive rooms and galleries
  • Adiabatic humidifiers for server rooms and timber-floored theatres
  • Dynamic sensors that report dew-point proximity to building management systems

Controlling humidity preserves fabric integrity, deters dust mites and maintains comfort for occupants.

Allergen, Odour and Pollutant Mitigation

Beyond particulate removal, HEP addresses a spectrum of airborne irritants:

  • Photocatalytic oxidation cells that break down odorous organic molecules
  • HEPA zones for medical suites and clean manufacturing cells
  • Ozone-safe ionisers that cluster fine particles for easier filtration
  • Source capture arms for vehicle exhaust in underground car parks

Each strategy is engineered to dovetail with existing ventilation without introducing pressure imbalances.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

Smart Controls and Building Management Integration

Intelligent control is pivotal for energy savings and occupant comfort. HEP programmers interface HVAC plant with BACnet, Modbus and KNX protocols, allowing for:

  • Time-of-day scheduling aligned to occupancy analytics
  • Weather compensation that anticipates Manchester’s temperature swings
  • Zone-level feedback loops using wireless sensors
  • Real-time dashboards for facilities teams to benchmark performance

Compliance with UK Standards and Regulations

Staying compliant safeguards landlords from penalties and protects building occupants. HEP ventilation solutions follow:

  • Part F and Part L of the Building Regulations
  • TM40 guidance for health and wellbeing
  • CIBSE Commissioning Codes A and B for air and water systems
  • BREEAM and WELL Building Standard criteria where required

Documentation packages include schematics, air-change calculations, validation reports and user guidance manuals.

Carbon Footprint Reduction

By prioritising low-energy fans, heat pumps and energy-recovery devices, HEP contributes to Greater Manchester’s 2038 carbon neutrality target. Key approaches:

  • Right-sizing motors to avoid overspecification
  • Variable speed drives (VSDs) that modulate fan and pump duty to actual load
  • High-grade insulation around ducts and pipework for thermal integrity
  • Air leakage testing with targets better than DW/144 specification

Ductwork Fabrication, Cleaning and Sealing

Bespoke Duct Fabrication

Confined loft spaces and complex geometry are common in Manchester loft conversions and retrofits. HEP’s in-house fabrication shop produces:

  • Rectangular and circular sections in galvanised, stainless or black steel
  • Acoustic-lined plenums for cinema rooms and recording studios
  • Powder-coated finishes to match exposed-duct aesthetics in modern offices
  • CNC plasma-cut components that marry speed with dimensional precision

Hygiene Maintenance and Air Duct Cleaning

Over time, ducts accumulate dust, microbial film and even construction debris. HEP hygiene teams employ:

  • Rotary brush systems combined with negative-pressure extraction
  • Video-scope inspections to verify cleanliness
  • Biocidal fogging where microbial counts exceed safe thresholds
  • Detailed post-clean certificates for health-and-safety records

Aeroseal and Leakage Testing

Uncontrolled leakage can waste up to 30 % of conditioned air. HEP uses aerosol-based sealing technology that:

  • Pressurises the duct network and releases atomised polymer particles
  • Automatically seeks and seals leaks up to 15 mm wide
  • Provides computer-generated reports before and after sealing
  • Reduces fan energy by restoring designed static pressure

Balancing, Commissioning and Performance Validation

Even the most sophisticated HVAC equipment under-delivers without accurate balancing. HEP commissioning engineers:

  • Measure airflow at grilles with vane anemometers and capture hoods
  • Adjust dampers to achieve supply-to-extract parity
  • Set water flow rates across coils using calibrated PICVs
  • Log data against design values and produce compliance sheets

Fine-tuning guarantees that each zone receives the intended temperature and air-quality performance.
